Virginia Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of German

Fall 2003
Information  Bulletin

From the President:

Hello everyone.  By now the semester is well underway  and you are all keeping  very busy as  German instructors all seem to do.
I am writing this letter to make sure that you are aware of the many activities available this Fall. The first big activity in Virginia is the
FLAVA Conference in Richmond.  Below you will see a listing of some of the programs available for German teachers.  Take note
that the FLAVA conference will be run a little differently this year.  Instead of a Saturday Awards luncheon for FLAVA, there will
be a dinner on Friday evening followed by a program.  We still plan to host the Ògeselliges Beisammensein,Ó so that we may have
a chance to socialize more informally among ourselves after mixing with the other language groups.  This party will take place, as
usual, in the room of your chapter president.

Please note also the AATG luncheon on Saturday.  We have planned to have a panel discussion with Faye Rollings-Carter, Frank
Wagner and Stefan Brunner  about   how the study of German is to survive and flourish in the classroom  (see below for more
information). I consider this to be a vital topic for all of us, and as many of us as possible should try to be there to take part in the
discussion.  There will also be a short business meeting and an election: Secretary, Treasurer and two members-at-large.

Please take a few minutes and fill out the form for the AATG  luncheon and send it to me.  I need to know how many to expect several
days ahead of time.

Two weeks after FLAVA you should plan to come to Sweet Briar College for the annual immersion weekend.

I must announce to you that this year two members of the Virginia Chapter are going to be awarded the AATG-Goethe Institut Certificate
of Merit at the national meeting in Philadelphia in November.  Chuck Walsh, who has been active not only in his own school, but also in
VOGS, FLAVA, the GovernorÕs School  and the executive council of  the Virginia Chapter, was nominated for the award by the executive
council of the Virginia Chapter.  Our congratulations Chuck!

The other award recipient is someone you all know, your chapter president.  I would like to thank all of you who put forth the effort to nominate
me and collect materials to submiton my behalf..  I feel honored to have been selected from a field of colleagues who should all be given such
an award.  My real award throughout all the years of working in the AATG has been the privilege to work with some of the nicest and mos
t interesting people in the educational profession.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the upcoming events.

Ron Horwege, President of Virginia Chapter

P.S. If you are receiving this through the regular mail, I still need to get a working e-mail address from you. I now have working addresses
for over 80% of our members, but I am trying for 100%
