Sweet Briar-Goethe House Total Immersion Weekend
Sweet Briar College hosts annually, with the Goethe House of New York, a
Total Immersion Weekend for German teachers in Virginia. The most recent
Immersion Weekend was held September 26 -28, 1997. This year's subject was
PROJEKT: GERMANY ON THE INTERNET IN THE CLASSROOM
The group of 31 German teachers explored five Bundesländer: Schleswig-Holstein,
Hamburg, Brandenburg, Thüringen and Sachsen and found information famous
Germans connected to these Bundesländer. The participants, who
were divided into six groups gathered materials from the Internet as well
as from information provided by the Goethe House.
The group was very fortunate to have the participation of Ralph Grüneberger,
a poet from Leipzig who has been working for several weeks at the Virginia
Center for Creative Arts across the road from Sweet Briar College. Ralph
not only provided much valuable information and assistance to the group
investigating Saxony, but also treated the group to a poetry reading and
discussion on Saturday evening. He read several poems from his recent book
Dieselbe Straße, ein anderes Deutschland as well as some recent
poems which he had just finished during his stay in Virginia.
The participants in the program paid a fee of $65. and the Goethe Institute
covered the expenses for accommodations and meals at Sweet Briar College.
